Make your own personalized cutting board and learn essential shop skills in this introductory class to woodworking.

In this course, you will design your own unique ~16" x 12" board from scratch by choosing from a variety of different hardwoods (hardwood supplies are provided by the class), cut them to size and assemble them. You will be taught the proper techniques to use table saw*, thickness planer, jointer and orbital sander and we’ll also continue building on the skills from the first class - proper gluing, sanding and finishing techniques - to ensure that your board will last a lifetime.

*If you have never used a power tools like table saw, miter saw and don’t feel comfortable yet, I recommend starting with the course Cutting Boards I, which will focus on assembling pre-cut pieces.

Day 1 Agenda: Students will design the unique look by deciding on orientation and combination of different hardwoods that will make up their own cutting board. They will then cut the pieces to the right sizes and clamp them together with wood glue.

Day 2 Agenda: Students will remove the board from the clamps, remove excessive glue, sand the wood smooth and add details like rounded-over corners or chamfers. Finally, they’ll apply a protective coat of finish.

Throughout the entire class an instructor will guide you through the process and guarantee your safety. If you have conflicts with attending Day 2, you may join any of the upcoming Cutting Board II class Day 2s to finish up your project.

All materials as well as safety equipment will be provided.

What to wearYou must dress safely and appropriately. Arrive for class in long pants, and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with socks that protect up to the ankle. Long sleeves should be avoided if possible and rolled up if necessary. Long hair must be tied back and dangly necklaces, earrings or other accessories shall be removed before starting the class. Additional protective gear will be provided as needed.

About the Instructor: Carlo has been a passionate woodworker for 5 years and recently made the move to leave his corporate job and started his own furniture-making company, Studio al Ponte. Cutting boards were the first projects that got him started, and he’s excited to share his knowledge for makers who want to learn the craft.
